Blood Oxidative Stress (BLOS)

Oxidative Stress is caused by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species or ROS. Oxidative Stress is estimated to cost Americans $800B/year in health care costs, but nobody knows the cause or how to measure it. Most scientists have been focused on the buildup of ROS within a targeted cell or type of tissue. However, one source of ROS has been overlooked: activated blood cells. White blood cells and platelets have the capability to be induced to produce high levels of ROS. Once activated, these ROS-positive blood cells produce ROS continuously, which permeates surrounding tissue. ROS has the ability to inhibit normal cellular function and cause DNA mutations, the major source of Cancers.

BLOS Demographics USA

Here's a figure of the Average BLOS# for different segments of the U.S. Adult Population (2010). The BLOS# is the % ROS-positive blood cells. The greater the BLOS#, the more ROS or reactive oxygen species that is produced by blood cells. This elevated level of plasma ROS is causing severe health problems in the form of inflammatory diseases and cancers. Adults with a BMI > 25 have a BLOS# that is more than 10x compared to a healthy person. The Average BLOS# for the USA adult population is 27. Clearly, the USA is suffering from a wide-spread epidemic of elevated BLOS.

BLOS and Chronic Diseases

Here's another figure that provides the range of BLOS# values for different health conditions. Notice that Normal Weight doesn't mean you have a healthy level of BLOS. As the BLOS# increases, the body responds in different ways (e.g., Atherosclerosis, Pre-Diabetes), which may protect the body against an anaerobic wound infection. Any level of BLOS above the estimated healthy maximum BLOS# of 5 increases one's risk of cancers, since BLOS generates ROS, a known carcinogen.

BLOS Hypotheses

Dr. Stroot published his first research article in Medical Hypotheses that describes a new hypothesis that links the Western Diet to BLOS. HemaGnosis filed a non-provisional U.S. patent application that describes methods and systems for measuring, reducing, and increasing BLOS. A simple clinical test, BLOS#™, is being developed for use in diagnosing patients with chronic and acute BLOS.

Formula

BLOS Underlying Cause

Here's a figure that shows the pathway from the dietary sulfur sources all the way to BLOS. Organic Sulfur (protein) provides sulfur for the slow growth of the Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) in the gut. Inorganic Sulfur (additives) provides sulfur for the rapid growth of the SRB, which results in Ultra-exogenous Sulfide Formation (USF) for short periods. The USF induces the ROS response in the captive blood cells in the right colonic capillary network.

BLOS Updates

Update November 22, 2016: A second research article published in Medical Hypotheses describes BLOS as a Secondary Host Defense System that is induced by an anaerobic wound infection. The link to the ePub is now available below.
